So, uh…why don’t you like Toriel that much?

Kinda long but this summed up my thoughts p well.

Those are…rather good points, actually.

I might need to reassess a few things regarding these characters…

The fact that she’s presented as a good guy and helps you through the ruins gets you an attachment to her, so of course people love her and want to defend her. It’s interesting, how the way a character is written and shown to you affects your perception of them. Heck, I LOVED Toriel to pieces before thinking about her a little more in depth.

There was another post I saw that pointed out that both Asgore and Toriel made a lot of mistakes and obviously aren’t dealing with the deaths of their children in a remotely constructive manner, what with the “identical houses” charade, and that probably the best thing for them to do once getting to the surface would be seeking out modern psychiatry.

Even given the points presented in the posts you linked, I still can’t say she’s a bad person. She was just presented with something horrific and couldn’t respond to it properly, and then when her husband did something she found repulsive, it was the final straw and she saw no other option but to cut herself off entirely. This, of course, could do no favors for her mental state by the time you get to her.

Yes, she did many bad things, that’s undeniable. But there’s a difference between doing bad things and being a bad person. What she really needs is professional help, support, and understanding, as does Asgore, and Alphys, and a lot of the cast, really.

That’s just what I think, anyway.

You’d be hard pressed to find a character in Undertale that doesn’t suffer from a severe lapse in judgement. That’s part of the point of the game

However, their recognizing and moving past these obstacles is of course, entirely up to the player. Depending on what you choose to do and the actions you take, there is always a chance of redemption and making things right. As long as you really want it

But of course, there are some things that always have consequences

That’s how I see it anyway. Toriel and Asgore both did bad things, in a number of ways, but it doesn’t make them bad people
