The void that engulfs you is quiet and calm, safe from the crackling of flames and cracking of gemstones. In it you are shapeless, liquid, featherlight – a feeling on which you have no time to dwell. She needs you, and your bones knit together to answer your duty. Steadier stance,…
Very long post under the cut, but I wanted to pick apart Connie’s change in attitude throughout Sworn to the Sword. She
starts out so independent and enthusiastic, and Pearl manages to mold her into
believing it’s the right thing to throw her life away for Steven. I wanted to
analyze how exactly Pearl managed to make that monumental change happen.
“I want to be there for Steven to fight by his side!”
From the start, it’s a partnership between these two. It’s about taking on the world together, and protecting each other.
“My Liege.” “Ms. Knight.”
These are two 11 year olds having fun. They’re not taking Pearl’s idea of knighthood seriously, because they are friends and partners. The idea of Steven being a “liege” or Connie being his “knight” is ridiculous to both of them.
“Cool! Hologram Pearl!”
This is the first element of miscommunication. Steven knows Holo!Pearl has been trouble in the past, but he’s
hesitant about being over-protective or ruining Connie’s fun. So he stays
silent.
I know everyone is saying that Connie is wearing an outfit from DBZ, but…I don’t think so? I think she’s wearing a “Kalaripayattu“ outfit?
Kalaripayattu is a Martial art which originated as a style in Kerala, during the early 13th Century AD. It is considered to be one of the oldest fighting system in existence. It is now practiced in Kerala, in contiguous parts of Tamil Nadu. It was originally practiced in northern and central parts of Kerala and the Tulunadu region of Karnataka.Kalaripayattu includes strikes, kicks, grappling, preset forms, weaponry and healing methods. Northern kalaripayattu is based on elegant and flexible movements,
evasions, jumps and weapons training, while the southern “Adi Murai”
style primarily follows the hard impact based techniques with priority
on empty hand fighting and pressure point strikes. Both systems make use
of internal and external concepts. (Wiki) Normally,
kalaripayattu can be started at the age of seven, when the body is not
stiff, less chance to damage. But it can be practiced at any age under
the supervision of a well experienced master.
I think it would probably make more sense, considering Connie is Indian?? I mean, if you look at the sword Connie uses, it’s the same as the women in the picture I found via Google?? (Pearl’s sword is a rapier, btw. At least, so I believe) Also, it sorta looks like Connie is wielding a Khanda, or least a type of one?
Also Connie does a lot of Kalaripayattu type jumps and such?? Look, I’m not India, so I’m not a hundred percent sure and I could be way off, but it just seems more likely???
AND SIDE NOTE
In love with Connies hair! And that it’s actually a real hairstyle!
Themis, Persephone, and Athena or Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl
Done, done, done! God, I am so tired of working on these three, but also so proud of how they came out. They were a pain to finish, but they were also a labor of love. Thank you to everyone for the reblogs and likes, I really appreciate it!
Okay but consider: Lapis’s wings aren’t made of water.
They follow the basic rules of gem weapon summoning (emerges from gem, appear/disappear as needed but don’t otherwise ‘hang around’ as part of her design), enough to make me think they are her gem weapon.
All other gem weapons appear to be crystalline in nature, made either partially or completely out of the same substance as their gem. Garnet’s gauntlets appear to be solid garnet, same for Jasper’s helmet or Pearl’s spear, and Amethyst’s whip is studded with amethyst spikes.
The mundane lapis lazuli stone dissolves in water, and is used to create a particular blue pigment
Incidentally, Lapis’s wings, unlike any other small amount of water in Steven Universe, are bright blue.
This is even more obvious in Jailbreak, with the very orange-heavy lighting.
Lapis’s wings are her gem weapon- and like other gem weapons, they’re made of the same material as her gem. But since you can’t make functional wings out of rigid, unyielding rock- her wings are instead made of the liquid form of her gem, dissolved lapis lazuli pigment.
