He’s basically the typical “self-absorbed, overconfident” trope BUT with one big difference.
Instead of “I’M SUPER COOL AND YOU SUCK!” he’s like “I’M SUPER COOL AND YOU’RE SUPER COOL TOO, PLEASE BE MY FRIEND!”
He’s never selfish or mean, everything he does has his friends and family in mind. He’s not self-loathing or hateful, he can see the goodness in himself and others without being a dick about it.
that is super special to me because his character inspires me as a self-loathing judgmental person who is working hard to change
hes incredibly brave. in the no mercy run if you spare him he says he was scared, and yet he confronted you anyway. getting you to be a better person is more important than possibly getting killed
hes actually really tough. undyne says hes strong enough to get into the royal guard, but she cant let him in bc hes too nice. and his attacks are already pretty tough when you fight him, and hes not even trying to kill you. imagine how hard his fight would be if he went all out
hes not dumb. he chooses to be nice, he chooses to be a good person. like i mentioned, he knows youre capable of killing him in the no mercy run, and hes scared. but again, he cares more about getting you to be a good person
hes enthusiastic about everything he does. if he cares about it, no matter what it is, he puts everything he has into it. making spaghetti, puzzles, friendship, getting into the royal guard. he tries his hardest at all of it
he cares about sans. he shows it in different ways than sans does, but he really does. he pushed him to get the sentry job and calls him out on slacking off (which in sans’s defense has more to do with depression than actual laziness but thats a whole other topic). even when youre fighting him he gets distracted thinking about a pun sans told
this is probably the most obvious one, but hes a really good person. he refuses to kill you no matter what. hes the only enemy that will never kill you. even toriel, its possible for her to kill you accidentally, but not papyrus. in any pacifist/neutral run he takes you down to 1 hp, then puts you in his shed to wait for undyne. then he gets worried about you when you escape. like undyne says, he was supposed to capture you, but he ends up befriending you. then of course in the no mercy run, he spares you right off the bat, refusing to fight entirely. if you spare him, he tells you how proud of you he is. if you kill him, he tells you he still believes in you, and that you can become a better person. even as you kill him he believes in you. hes such a good person and the game really really does not want you killing him. it is impossible to kill him by accident in any run, and if you do kill him the game will punish you for it. itll guilt you to hell and back through his lines, through sans’s lines at the end – when hes judging you and during the phone call – through the fact that sans disappears for the rest of the game until your judgement, through little things that arent even noticeable if you dont know what youre looking for. papyrus is the kindest and the best person in the game, and if you kill him there will be punishment
i know theres almost certainly more, so feel free to add anything else
Me: *takes a deep breath*
