i don’t really understand why you would be pro-zoo. like i understand nature reserves and sanctuaries where people can observe from afar, but it doesn’t seem right to me when they’re locked up in generally small confined areas for people to watch them do nothing all day. idk maybe i’m getting this wrong, and i still really respect you, i just don’t understand this. like i interned at a zoo and felt uncomfortable with how small their living areas were and how they had no stimulation

Zoos don’t look like this anymore.

They look like this:

Good zoos do not keep their animals in “tiny spaces” with no enrichment.  I’m not pro-roadside zoo.  I’m pro-accredited zoo.  Zoos are incredibly important for conservation and education.

There should be way more pictures of modern zoos so i just add some more

Seriously zoos do so much important conservation work as well I hate when people shit all over zoos as if the animals are locked up and not looked after

The SF Zoo has two sea lions. Now, if you know SF, you know that sea lions are a Thing. They’re all over Pier 39 and various other beaches in N California. In fact, the zoo is near the ocean, so there are sea lions not 200 yards from the zoo entrance. So having sea lions in the zoo seems sort of superfluous.

Except the sea lions are blind. One was found as an adult after suffering a gun shot wound to the face that destroyed his eyes. The other was found as an adolescent, weak and starving because it had been blinded and unable to hunt. So they were rescued and introduced and the zoo built them a nice pool where they can swim and sunbathe and people toss them fish. It’s not the biggest exhibit, or the fanciest. But it’s a home for them, where they’re safe and well fed. Sea lions aren’t the most romantic of animals, but they’re a part of SF culture and a lot of us have a soft spot for the loud, bulbous things. And because of zoos, these two get to live long, happy lives.

Whenever anyone complains about zoos, I think about Silent Knight and Henry.

I think it’s St. Louis zoo that is saving big cats in Africa. Scientists couldn’t figure out what was killing off the local lion population. They were dying off from Canine Distemper. The local unvaccinated dogs of the towns would spread the disease to other animals or have it themselves. When the lions ate the infected animals they would catch it as well. You know what that Zoo is doing to stop this disease? They are going over to those towns and vaccinating the dogs for free. The community loves it and people from other villages comes for miles to get their dogs vaccinated as well.

They also do work with camel populations because the local human population use the camels for food sources the zoos help monitor the camels health.

Another zoo, I want to say it’s the Oregon zoo but don’t quote me on that, is helping female inmates. The zoo works with the female prisons by encouraging the inmates to assist in the breeding and raising of endangered species of butterflies. They plant the specific plants that the butterflies and catapillars need, raise them, and release them. These inmates get noted in any scientific journals that get published. They are giving these inmates a sense of accomplishment and validation.

Zoos not only save species but bring together and assist communities in an effort to save the environment. Zoos, good zoos, are essential to the future and I will fight anyone who tries to say otherwise.

PS you don’t see PETA doing any of this.

One of the local zoos in my area at one point rescued a bald eagle that had been shot and kept it in the zoo to let it recuperate until they freed it again. Some of the zoos in my state will keep injured animals there until they heal again.

Helsinki Zoo is the world leader in snow leopard and Amur leopard conservation, in their care these endangered species have managed to breed more than anywhere else in captivity and this in turn has enabled the re-introduction of these animals back to their native habitats. https://www.korkeasaari.fi/helsinki-zoo/

I work at a zoo that is instrumental in the California Condor recovery program (among dozens of other conservation projects). We went from 42 surviving individuals left to over 400, over 200 of whom are in the wild. We’re part of the amur leopard species survival plan with two young animals who are eagerly attempting to make babies. We host one of North America’s only bachelor troops of western lowland gorillas, preserving the social structure of wild gorillas. All of our bald eagles are rescues who would not survive in the wild. All our keepers participate in field research and conservation work in addition to a full time team of conservationists. We host the most genetically valuable male Masai giraffe in North America, who has sired 5 offspring with 1 on the way, increasing the genetic diversity of his entire species. If you’re against zoos, you don’t know what zoos do.

why do writers make a woman being infertile out to be the most tragic and horrific thing ever??? like adoption exists???? surrogates??? do they think mothers who adopt their children aren’t “real” mothers??? not all women want children anyhow???? a woman’s??? worth??? is not??? defined by??? her ability??? to??? bear??? children???

PRINT THIS EVERWHERE

also please note how awful this trope is for women who DO struggle with infertility; it’s often horrifically painful and heart-wrenching, and writers using it for cheap pathos is insensitive and cruel

This is a map of Asia. North Americans, you may notice this map is not solely comprised of Japan, Korea, China and Thailand. People in the UK, you may notice India is not  a continent. That is, if those of you who generalize entire continents can even pinpoint India on a map. Indians are Asian, gasp! And not all brown skinned people are Indian, also, gasp! There are an alarming amount of people, of all ages, from all backgrounds, who seem to be unable to process this.

I’m ethnically Asian. Since Asia is an extremely large continent, I could be from any number of countries. I am neither from India, China, Korea, Japan or Pakistan, yet not so surprisingly, I am still Asian.

Yes, there are commonalities across regions, through the conflation of cultures, colonialism, globalization, transnationalism and movement of diasporas. Sometimes these are all the same thing. Rickshaws, rice and curry can be found across the continent. But let’s not overgeneralize. You can also find Buddhists, Catholics, Muslims and Hindus across Asia. Cantonese Speaking Chinese Muslims! English Speaking Indian Jews!

No, we are not all the same. Orientalism? (Please look up Edward Said for basic concepts) No thank you.

Geography, people. It’s important.

This pops up on my dash every so often. I reblog it again, not just because I wrote it, but because nothing has changed since I first posted this.

What’s cool about Iran is that it falls in 3 different regions of Asia so depending on what part of Iran you’re in, you can kind of get culture shocked a bit. The central and western part of the country is West Asia, the north east is Central Asia, and the southeast is in South Asia.

To the folks wondering about Russia being included, I want to mention that the cultural debates and angst about that has been going on for CENTURIES. While France has been pretty fetishized all the way back from Peter the Great, there is no question that we are not Europe, even with that influence showing really obviously in historical seats of power like St. Petersburg. Nonetheless, the whole country was under control of the Mongols (The Golden Horde) from roughly 1242 to 1480, and that left an enormous Mongolian and Tatar heritage that remains to this day. The ancient Scythians are huge in the cultural imagination as well. And besides… look at the Russians who are outside the standard “Kievan Rus” phenotype (which most folks assume is how all Russians look.)

Here are three of the 30 distinct ethnic groups in Siberia alone:

AS SOMEONE WITH NORTHERN IRANIAN (AZERBAIJANI)/RUSSIAN/ HAZARA-PERSIAN/ UYGHUR-CHINESE ANCESTRY THIS IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL POST

And that’s why sometimes you’ll see a person with curly black hair, pale skin, and hazel-green eyes (my grand-father’s sister) who turn out to be Chinese. Mad recessive genes game at play, I swear. Mongols, they really got around.

what are your thoughts on homosexuality and gay marriage? aren’t christians supposed to hate them?

destinypath:

zoesv-deactivated20180721:

Not even close! Christians are not called to hate ANYBODY. Proverbs 10:12 – Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs and 1 John 2:11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Instead, rathermore, we are instructed to LOVE everybody.

Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves and

Ephesians 4:32

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

You see, Christians may not agree with homosexuality/LGBT, but that does NOT mean they hate them. As stated in the verses above, we are called to show EVERYBODY love and restrain from hatred, wrath, violence, etc.

There are many extremist Christians, however, who have made a bad name for the majority of Christians. Some are extremely violent and aggressive towards gays, persecuting them and just being overall jerks. Please keep in mind that is NOT the way a real Christian acts!!! I have discussed these things with three different local pastors of mine, and they all told me the same thing: We are to treat the LGBT community with love, respect and kindness, just as we do with any other human being on the planet.

So, to sum it up; Christians are NOT, I repeat, NOT supposed to hate LGBT members/supporters, and they are NOT supposed to hate anybody in general. They are supposed to love everyone, and share God’s joy and hope.

As a Christian, I hold these beliefs, yes. But, just as I mentioned above, I may not support LGBT, BUT that doesn’t mean I hate them. No no no! I have many LGBT friends, as I said, and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. They are WONDERFUL!! I will love everyone just as God has loved me. And believe me, He loves EVERYBODY, no matter what your sexuality, gender, race, or whatever is. He loves you, and I do too!

Anon asking about my opinion on transgenders, it falls under this category.

Can i just say that i love you for respecting the LGBT community. My step mom’s side of the family is mostly Christian and they dispise me for being LGBT. You’re like, the first person i know who listens to the part where you’re supposed to love everyone?? I just wanna say thank you.

zoesv-deactivated20180721:

Of course my friend! It’s my life purpose to spread the love of Jesus and get as many people to heaven as I can. When He was on Earth, He loved EVERYBODY. He acquainted Himself with the lowly and the poor, the people that the strict religious people of their times despised. Jesus told us to love everybody, whether they are a neighbor or an enemy. It is very sad to see how many so-called Christians have become so hostile. Christianity may disagree with LGBT but it by no means endorses violence or hate. Any Christian who practices such violence has forgotten their way and who they’re truly following… Jesus.

antarestyl:

No. No, you know what? NO. This is NOT how medicine works. NOT. AT. ALL.

First of why is anybody asking a doc stuff like this over iMessage? How can you even get a wrong number like this??? So no.

Secondly no. You can’t just google symptoms and hope the right thing will come out of it. Especially like this, it is an incredible coincidence that the person googling it got the right answer in the end. In the worst case you get answers for everything from “its an infection” to “it’s cancer” from google.

And do you know why? because symptoms are stuff like “pain” or “a red
rash” and it’s not like that “pain plus rash plus random symptom a
equals specific sickness XY” No it’s not like that. It’s more like “this
sickness MAY cause a number of the following list of symptoms” as well
as “this symptom MAY appear in following sicknesses”

To find the
right diagnosis you gotta combine a lot more than the knowledge of
symptoms. You need the result of your examination, you need blood tests,
pictures, a whole lot of tests. Not just to confirm your theory but
also to prove that it isn’t something else. Pain in the chest could just be from a pulled muscle. It could also be an upset stomach, the onset on an pulmonary infection or an heart attack. And you GOTTA PROVE that it isn’t one of the serve ones that could lead to death.

So just googling symptoms is like the most bullshit way to get to an diagnosis, let alone to get to the treatment, like that is another whole box. (because who would have thought, there are different options for each sickness)

And what the fuck is up with that “it took 3h for trained medical professionals for figure out what took you 3 minutes”? NO THIS IS BULLSHIT. The person googling stuff didn’t figure it out. They gave an guess that happened to be correct.

But you know what the trained medical professionals did? They figures it out. They tested this shit, asked a lot of questions, they examined the patient, did maybe a arteriography and a duplex sonography of the leg to find that there was an blockage of an arterial vessel. They might have done some blood tests and went on to search why there was a blockage, what kind of it and THEN decided that it was the best to put in the stent. They needed these 3 hours to figure out if it was an blockage or a leak of the vessel or something entirely else. They needed the time to figure out if that person even could have the OP, if there were contraindications for this procedure or if there was a better option for this case. And most likely there were other patients they had to care for at the same time too so yeah.

Trained medical professionals figure stuff out. They do the work on the patient.

Some random person googling symptoms are making guesses with the internet.

Fuck this.
